What does "green" really mean?

To earn earth-friendly status, a beauty product should be plant-based or derived from renewable resources and be manufactured with minimal energy. Plus, it should come in a package made of recycled materials and break down into nontoxic components when washed down the drain. Problem is, lots of "green" goodies lining store shelves fail to meet these standards. To be absolutely positive you're getting a ture green product, look for these logos and labels:

LEGIT LOGOS

USDAorganic by you.

USDA ORGANIC

These products contain at least 95 percent organic ingredients that are grown without the use of chemical pesticides, fertilizers or genetically modified ingredients.

Natural-Products-Assoc-Seal by you.

NATURAL PRODUCTS ASSOCIATION CERTIFIED

Products contain at least 95 percent natural or naturally derived ingredients that come from renewable resources such as plants. Products are not tested on animals and are packaged using recycled materials.

Ecocert by you.

ECOCERT

This internationally recognized certification indicates that 100 percent of ingredients are of natural origin. Product meet environmental standards from formulation through processing.

LABELS TO LOOK FOR

Paraben-free

Parabens are preservatives that protect products from bacterial and microbial funk. They require many resources to manufacture, and some can be toxic to the environment and cause skin allergies in certain individuals.

Petroleum-free

The extraction, processing, and disposal of petroleum-based ingredients such as mineral oil tax the environment. They're also common causes of allergies and contact dermatitis.

No Sodium Lauryl Sulfate

SLS produces the lather in sudsy products like shampoo. But the manufacturing process can create environmental pollutants.

Natural Fragrances

It means the product contains no chemical perfumes - key for people with sensitive skin.
